the electrostatic pickup turns 30
Happy 30th birthday to STAT! The electrostatic pickup for double bass, cello and violin has reached a significant milestone this year. While it was in development a few years prior, it officially received worldwide patent recognition after the summer of 1993.
This iconic cork-covered contact microphone has seen a few minor updates over the years, but its core technology and exceptional sound quality have remained unchanged. It continues to be a standard choice, beloved by countless musicians worldwide. In these three decades the STAT were used by great bassist, cellists and violinists like Charlie Haden, Rufus Reid, Mark Fain, Didier Lockwood, Hank Roberts, Sam Bardfeld, Scott Tixier and many more...
Stephan Schertler, a double bassist himself, initiated the development due to a personal need - to eliminate the quacky amplified sound associated with piezo pickups. After successfully integrating a microphone into the bridge, the next challenge was to adapt it for smaller bridges found on cellos and violins, giving birth to the STAT series.
